Text: John 2:1–11
Theme: Jesus reveals His glory through transformation.
Key Verse: John 2:11 – “This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.”
Scripture Reading
Read John 2:1–11
- Who was present?
- What problem occurred?
- How did Jesus respond?
- What was the outcome?
Background
The Wedding
Jewish weddings often lasted several days. Running out of wine would have been a serious social embarrassment for the bridegroom’s family.
The Wine
Wine symbolized joy, celebration, and blessing throughout Scripture.
The Waterpots
Six stone jars were used for ceremonial washing according to Jewish purification customs.
Jesus intentionally chose these jars, giving them new significance.
Verse-by-Verse Study
- A Need Was Recognized (John 2:1–3)
“They have no wine.”
Mary noticed the need before anyone else.
Lesson:
- God cares about everyday needs.
- Nothing is too small to bring to Jesus.
Discussion Question What “empty places” in your life need Jesus today?
- Mary Trusted Jesus (John 2:4–5)
“Do whatever He tells you.”
These are Mary’s final recorded words in Scripture.
They remain timeless advice for every believer.
Lesson
Faith begins with obedience.
Discussion
Why is obedience sometimes difficult?
- Jesus Used What Was Available (John 2:6–8)
The servants filled the jars with water.
Notice:
- Jesusdidn’tcreate wine out of nothing.
- The servants had to obey first.
- They filled the jars completely.
Lesson God often works through what we already have when we faithfully obey Him.
- The Miracle Happened (John 2:9–10)
The water became excellent wine.
The master of the banquet was amazed by its quality.
Lesson
Jesus doesn’t merely meet needs—He provides abundantly and with excellence.
- The Purpose of the Miracle (John 2:11)
This miracle:
- Revealed Jesus’ glory.
- Strengthened the disciples’ faith.
- Marked the beginning of His public ministry.
Miracles are signs pointing to Jesus, not ends in themselves.
Major Lessons
- Jesus Cares About Everyday Life
He attended a wedding before preaching a sermon or healing a crowd.
Application: Invite Jesus into your home, family, work, and relationships.
- Jesus Brings Transformation
Water became wine.
Likewise, Jesus transforms:
- Fear into peace
- Shame into grace
- Weakness into strength
- Sinners into new creations
- Obedience Comes Before the Miracle
The servants obeyed before seeing results.
Sometimes God’s greatest work begins after simple acts of faith.
- God Gives His Best
The best wine came last.
God’s timing may differ from ours, but His provision is never lacking.
- Jesus Fulfills What the Old Covenant Pointed Toward
The water jars used for ceremonial purification symbolize the old system of ritual cleansing. By transforming the water into wine, Jesus points toward the new covenant, where true cleansing and abundant life come through Him.
Discussion Questions
- Why do you think Jesus chose a wedding for His first miracle?

- How can you practice “Do whatever He tells you” thisweek?

Closing Reflection
Ask participants:
- What stood out most from today’s lesson?
- What is one truth you will apply this week?
Allow time for sharing and prayer.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Your glory through this first sign. Thank You that You care about every part of our lives and have the power to transform what is ordinary into something that reflects Your grace and goodness. Give us hearts that obey You, faith that trusts You, and eyes that recognize Your work in our lives. May our lives point others to You, just as this miracle revealed Your glory. In Your name we pray, Amen.
