“When Confidence Crumbles: Finding Your Strength in God Again”

Bible Study Notes | May 27th, 2026

Key Scripture:

Isaiah 41:10“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee…”

Objective:

To help believers understand how loss, failure, disappointment, criticism, and setbacks can damage confidence, and how God restores confidence through His presence, promises, and purpose.

Introduction

Everyone experiences seasons when confidence is shaken.

  • A failed marriage
  • A job loss
  • A ministry setback
  • Financial hardship
  • Betrayal
  • Health challenges
  • Personal mistakes

Loss of confidence often causes us to question ourselves, our abilities, and sometimes even God’s plan for our lives.

The good news is that God specializes in restoring what has been broken.

Point 1: Loss Can Cause Us to Forget Who We Are

Scripture:

1 Samuel 30:6“But David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.”

David had lost:

  • His family
  • His possessions
  • The support of his men

His followers were ready to stone him.

Yet David did not allow his circumstances to define him.

Lesson:

When confidence is lost, we often forget our identity.

The enemy wants us to believe:

  • We are failures.
  • We are finished.
  • We are defeated.

God reminds us:

  • We are chosen.
  • We are loved.
  • We are called.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What circumstances have challenged your confidence?
  2. How does remembering your identity in Christ help you overcome self-doubt?
  3. What lies does the enemy tell when confidence is low?

Point 2: Confidence Is Built on God’s Strength, Not Ours

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 12:9“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Paul learned that confidence is not self-confidence alone.

True confidence comes from:

  • God’s grace
  • God’s power
  • God’s presence

Sometimes God allows weakness so we can learn dependence.

Lesson:

Our confidence becomes unstable when it is built on:

  • Talent
  • Success
  • Position
  • Recognition

But confidence built on God remains strong.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever relied more on your abilities than God’s strength?
  2. How can weakness become an opportunity for spiritual growth?
  3. What areas of your life require greater dependence on God?

Point 3: God Restores Confidence Through His Promises

Scripture:

Joshua 1:9“Be strong and of a good courage… for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Joshua faced:

  • A leadership transition
  • Huge responsibility
  • Uncertainty about the future

God repeatedly told him:“Be strong and courageous.”

Lesson:

Confidence grows when faith grows.

God’s promises become the foundation of renewed courage.

When we focus on:

  • Problems, fear grows.
  • Promises, confidence grows.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Which promise of God encourages you most right now?
  2. How can meditating on Scripture strengthen confidence?
  3. What fears are competing with God’s promises in your life?

Point 4: Failure Does Not Have to Be Final

Scripture:

Luke 22:61-62; John 21:15-17

Peter denied Jesus three times.

His confidence was shattered.

Yet Jesus restored him and recommissioned him.

Peter went from failure to becoming a bold preacher on the Day of Pentecost.

Lesson:

One failure does not determine your future.

God can redeem:

  • Mistakes
  • Poor decisions
  • Seasons of weakness

God’s restoration is greater than our failure.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do people often struggle to recover after failure?
  2. What can we learn from Peter’s restoration?
  3. How has God used past failures to strengthen you?

Point 5: Confidence Returns When We Walk in God’s Purpose

Scripture:

Philippians 1:6“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it…”

Confidence often returns through obedience.

Waiting for confidence before acting can keep us stuck.

Often God says:

  • Take the step.
  • Trust Me.
  • Keep moving.

As we obey, confidence grows.

Lesson:

Purpose produces confidence.

God is not finished with you.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Is there an area where fear has kept you from moving forward?
  2. How does serving others help rebuild confidence?
  3. What next step is God asking you to take?

Practical Applications

This week:

  1. Remember God’s Truth

Write down three Scriptures that speak to your identity.

  1. Replace Negative Thoughts

When self-doubt appears, answer it with God’s Word.

  1. Take One Faith Step

Do something you’ve been avoiding because of fear.

  1. Pray Daily for Courage

Ask God to strengthen your heart and mind.

Closing Reflection

Confidence is not believing you can do everything.

Confidence is believing that God can work through you despite your weaknesses.

You may have lost confidence because of:

  • Failure
  • Loss
  • Rejection
  • Disappointment

But God has not lost confidence in His purpose for your life.

Closing Question

What would you attempt for God if you truly believed He was with you, strengthening you, and working through you?

Closing Prayer

“Father, thank You that our confidence is not based on our abilities but on Your faithfulness. Restore every heart that has been discouraged. Renew courage where fear has taken hold. Help us remember who we are in Christ and trust You to complete the work You have begun in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Make the lesson more relatable to today

Bible Study Lesson: Rebuilding Confidence in a World That Constantly Tears It Down

Title:

“When You Don’t Feel Good Enough: Recovering Confidence God’s Way”

Key Scripture

Hebrews 10:35“Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.”

Opening Question

Have you ever felt confident one day and completely discouraged the next?

Today, confidence is under attack from things previous generations never faced:

  • Social media comparisons
  • Job instability
  • Financial pressure
  • Constant criticism online
  • Failed relationships
  • Ministry disappointments
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • The pressure to always appear successful

Many people look confident on the outside but secretly struggle with insecurity, self-doubt, and fear of failure.

Icebreaker Discussion

Ask the group:

What is one thing in today’s world that can quickly damage a person’s confidence?

Examples:

  • Losing a job
  • A negative comment on social media
  • Divorce
  • Being overlooked for a promotion
  • Not measuring up to others
  • Financial setbacks
  • Aging and changing seasons of life

Point 1: Comparison Is Stealing More Confidence Than Failure

Scripture

Galatians 6:4“But let every man prove his own work…”

Many people aren’t losing confidence because they’re failing.

They’re losing confidence because they’re comparing.

Modern Example

A pastor compares his church to another church.

A businessman compares his success to others.

A young person compares their life to Instagram.

A woman compares herself to edited photos online.

A man compares his finances to people driving expensive cars.

Comparison makes us feel behind even when we’re making progress.

Lesson

God never called you to be someone else.

Your assignment is not their assignment.

Your timeline is not their timeline.

Discussion Questions

  1. How has comparison affected your confidence?
  2. Why is comparison so dangerous today?
  3. What can we do to focus on God’s purpose instead of other people’s success?

Point 2: Your Failure Is an Event, Not Your Identity

Scripture

Proverbs 24:16“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.”

Modern Example

Someone loses a business.

Someone experiences divorce.

Someone makes a financial mistake.

Someone fails at ministry.

Someone gets fired.

The mistake becomes their identity.

Instead of saying:

“I failed.”

They start saying:

“I am a failure.”

Lesson

The enemy wants you to wear your mistakes like a name tag.

God calls you redeemed, forgiven, and restored.

Failure may describe what happened.

It does not define who you are.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do people have trouble separating failure from identity?
  2. What labels has God helped you overcome?
  3. How can the church help people recover from failure?

Point 3: Confidence Drops When We Listen to the Wrong Voices

Scripture

Romans 12:2

Modern Example

Many people hear:

  • Social media influencers
  • News commentators
  • Critics
  • Negative family members

more than they hear God.

We live in a noisy world.

People wake up and immediately check:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Email

before checking in with God.

Lesson

The loudest voice in your life eventually becomes the most influential voice.

If criticism is louder than God’s promises, confidence will suffer.

Discussion Questions

  1. What voices influence you the most?
  2. How can we hear God more clearly?
  3. What practical changes can help us guard our minds?

Point 4: Confidence Grows Through Small Wins

Scripture

Zechariah 4:10“Who hath despised the day of small things?”

Modern Example

Many people want overnight success.

God often works through daily faithfulness.

  • One prayer at a time
  • One act of obedience at a time
  • One victory at a time

David killed Goliath publicly because he had defeated lions and bears privately.

Lesson

Confidence grows when we remember God’s faithfulness in small things.

Discussion Questions

  1. What small victory has God given you recently?
  2. Why do we often overlook small progress?
  3. How can celebrating small wins strengthen faith?

Point 5: God’s Confidence in You Is Greater Than Your Confidence in Yourself

Scripture

Philippians 1:6

Modern Example

Many believers say:

  • “I’m too old.”
  • “I’m not qualified.”
  • “I’ve made too many mistakes.”
  • “I don’t have enough education.”
  • “I don’t have enough money.”

Yet throughout Scripture, God used ordinary people:

  • Moses had excuses.
  • Gideon had fear.
  • Peter had failures.
  • Paul had a past.

God saw more in them than they saw in themselves.

Lesson

Your future is not determined by your opinion of yourself.

It is determined by God’s purpose for your life.

Discussion Questions

  1. What excuse do you most often give yourself?
  2. How does God’s view of you differ from your own?
  3. What is God calling you to do despite your fears?

Real-Life Application

This week, challenge everyone to:

  1. Stop One Comparison Habit

Unfollow or mute something that constantly makes you feel inadequate.

  1. Write Down Three God-Given Strengths

Focus on gifts God has already given you.

  1. Replace Negative Self-Talk

When you think:“I can’t.”

Replace it with:“With God’s help, I can.”

  1. Take One Courageous Step

Make the phone call.Apply for the position. Start the ministry. Have the conversation. Take the next step.

Confidence often follows obedience.

Closing

A smartphone can have the latest technology, but if the battery isn’t connected to a power source, eventually it dies.

Many believers are trying to live on yesterday’s charge.

Confidence fades when we disconnect from God.

Prayer, worship, Scripture, and fellowship recharge the soul.

The answer to a confidence crisis is not believing more in yourself.

The answer is believing more in the God who lives within you.

What would you do this year if you stopped focusing on your limitations and started trusting God’s ability to work through you?

Closing Prayer

“Father, in a world filled with comparison, criticism, and uncertainty, help us place our confidence in You. Heal every wound caused by failure, rejection, and disappointment. Remind us that our identity is found in Christ and not in our performance. Give us courage to take the next step of faith and trust that You are still working in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
